We were very lucky this year to have Valerie Bloom visit us to launch our Black History Month 2017 celebrations. The children were able to ask Valerie a raft of different questions about her career and her books. Valerie was very impressed by the work Hollydale had done based on texts: Hot like Fire and Fruits.

Last night the Year 3 and 4 children performed at Bold Tendencies Car Park with the Multi Storey Orchestra. The children have been working with the orchestra for the last few weeks on a piece called ‘In Colour’. The theme was inspired by a Bold Tendencies project exploring how people are impacted physically and emotionally by the colour around them. The concert gave our pupils the opportunity to showcase their learning alongside the orchestra and their singing and performance was outstanding.
The NSPCC were in school this week to talk to children about Speak out, Stay safe. The NSPCC led an engaging assembly and children gave some considered and thoughtful responses.
On Friday 23rd June, Hollydale supported ‘Green for Grenfell’. Children were asked to donate £1 and all money raised was sent to the charities supporting those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire. As part of our learning about life in Great Britain, Hollydale held their own mock election on Thursday. The children watched Newsround clips about the main parties and then were taken to the Polling station in the hall to cast their vote. Later that day, after the polls had closed, Y6 pupils counted the votes and acted as Returning Officers to announce them to the school. The winner of our general election was Labour with 120 votes. Here are some of the thoughts of the children: On Wednesday 7th June Year 5 learnt about the General Election and why Theresa May broke the 5 year rule. The General Election is when you vote for the next Government if you are 18 or older and if you have lived abroad for less than 15 years. It was called a snap election because it is supposed to be every 5 years but it got cut to 2 years. Tomi, Year 5 I know that the Conservatives have the most seats in Parliament, but no one has won so that means it is a hung parliament. I want Labour to win because Jeremy Corbyn said he would let people age 16 and over vote and he said we would not pay for university. Nana, Year 6 I enjoyed voting in the election, it felt very real because of the way the polling station was set up. It was a very hard decision because a lot of parties seemed really good. We will be having a non-uniform day on Friday 24th March in order to raise money for the Red Nose Day appeal. For a small donation of £1.00, children will be allowed to come to school wearing red – this can be red clothes, red hat or even red hair! All money raised will be donated to the Red Nose Day appeal to support some of their hugely important charity work. Get your jokes ready! Classes will be holding a joke contest – children can tell one joke to their class. The class will vote on their favourite joke which will be shared in their key stage assembly. We are hoping you will support us and we will be able to raise a significant amount of money for the Red Nose Day Appeal. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
We had a wonderful day celebrating world book day with authors working with EYFS, KS1 and KS2 on various activities. The costumes were amazing! Well done everyone for your fabulous efforts. We all 'dropped everything to read' at 1:40pm and an incredible focused silence descended over the whole building as everyone became immersed in their favourite books.
This year’s theme for Safer Internet Day is ‘Be the change: Unite for a better internet’ with a subtheme of ‘The Power of Image’, focusing on the ways that young people use image and video to communicate. This morning during assembly the children talked about what they like watching and how they watch videos online. They heard about Smartie the Penguin and helped him make the right choices in order to stay safe online. What do you like to watch online? What advice can you give to Smartie about how to stay safe online? Who could you talk to if you see something upsetting or frightening online?
Hollydale's School Council hosted their first ever podcast this term! Over four, one hour sessions the School Council members planned, recorded and produced a short podcast documenting their own and their peer’s experiences at school. Today Year 6 took part in a workshop about Road Safety. This interactive C.S.I. style workshop promoted transitional road safety skills in an interactive and unforgettable way, addressing the dangers of distractions from phones, music and peer influence around roads.The following report was written by two Year 6 pupils (Riyan and Teshane) who attended the interactive drama session. "As soon as we entered the hall, a wounded cyclist and a severely injured victim caught our eyes. After being given direct instructions, we examined the scene for clues. With our best investigative skills we caught a glimpse of the victim's sister. She accused the cyclist of thrusting him onto the road. The victim was clothed in a black hoodie. Lying next to him was a set of large headphone and his mobile phone - still blaring!! Teshane stated, “The Riot Act (a road safety theatre company) had deliberately set up the scene, the aftermath of a road accident. Our job was to determine exactly what happened. We learnt about the HAZARDS of being distracted whilst walking home from school. It was an excellent way to get us talking about the dangers we face on our busy roads."
This week parents/carers and friends were treated to our stunning whole school Nativity performance. With solo and group performances, our youngest children shone like the Bethlehem star as they sang, danced and acted the Christmas story. Children from KS1 and KS2 also sang and acted beautifully. We truly do have some budding performers in our midst! Thank you to all children for a job well done and to our dedicated staff for all their hard work.
Last week (21st-25th November 2016) we celebrated Road Safety Week. All classes took part in various events to raise awareness on how to stay safe during the darker winter months. Every class took part in a local area 'messy map' activity to explore the following:
- the safest zebra and traffic light crossings to use
- traffic audits to gauge busiest and calmest streets
- soundscapes to determine the different types of traffic in our local area
This week the pupils and staff of Hollydale have celebrated the AMAZING, splendiferous and fantabulous author - ROALD DAHL!!! The celebrations and events exploded with a marvellous BANG on Monday with a special Roald Dahl assembly - where pupils met the horrid farmers from Fantastic Mr Fox. In class, phases have been exploring a key Roald Dahl text. Just walk through the school and you will see the swashboggling learning that has taken place. Children (and adults) have really enjoyed exploring the works of Dahl so much so, that we are sure this is just the beginning of a life-long love!
